Before I start today I'd like to say that i'm not trying to please the guys in the eco movement. I beleive that Global Warming is a scapegoat.
Today I've had to drive economically, so I don't have to fill up so much and save a lot of money. Do you know something? I found the whole thing rather fun. Basically speaking it guves you a feeling on tension and challenge that you don't get when you drive quickly, mainly because there are so many cars not going quickly making sure you can't either. When driving economically it doesn't annoy you quite so much that you can't go quickly.
Today I was finidng out so much more about the lower end of my cars gear ratios. I found out that I can run in fifth at just 30mph on a flat and the car will not feel underpowered. This is gear that I would guess could get you up to 110. I don't know that obviously because I've never done it but I reckon it could. It also gives you a really good excuse not to brake. The reason being that you don't want to scrub off speed that you've burnt fuel off to reach. Not using the brakes is very exciting, and considering that cars don't use fuel up when they are in gear with no throttle on, very economical.
The journy is very intense as you're constantly looking around for any cars that could cause you to brake. In fact economical driving is in itself a very skillful way of driving. Driving economically isn't all about going slow you know. It's about building speed in an economical way, not using too much throttle but getting there reasonably quick as you don't want to be accelerating for too long. You have got to slow down without using the brakes. As a matter of fact it's hard to drive economically, especially if you're used to driving fast and enjoy going fast. It is rather fun.
Who'd have thought it? Apart from Prius drivers obviously, but even they are lying to themselves.
