That is a difficult one. I'm thinking I need to make a video about this some day but for now I'm going to discuss the issue.
It's undoubtedly one of the big draws of a supercar. Hearing the engine roaring away behind your ears doing the business as you pound down the road at an unlimited number of miles per hour is one of the most enjoyable parts of motoring.
My first candidate is my car oddly enough. I'm probably a tad biased but I do have a valid case for it. No it's not exactly a raucous roar or a harsh growl but there is something that gives it characterful edge. It's not the sound of the exhaust or the engine but the sound of the drivetrain. When your in fifth and travelling at 50mph every time you press the throttle and the drivtrain engages it makes a awesome little whining sound. It's not really a whine to be honest, it more or less sings. I love it.
Another, more conventional choice, is the Aston Martin V12 Vantage. It features Astons 6.2 V12 and with less sound insulation than than other Aston cars it sings. It really is a beautiful sonerous engine that sings its lungs out. Funny thing is, it can growl to. If you're travelling at a low speed and jab the throttle it'll growl at nearby pedestrians. That is true of most supercars but the Astons has a more get out of my way tone to it!
My third choice is the raucous howl of the Porsche 911. Featuring a straight six engine the car makes a unique noise. It's a tough choice between this and any of the old fashioned US muscle cars but I prefer the higher revving howl of 911 straight six to the pig iron strum of the V8. It's a harsh sound in a way and it sounds like the car is being tortured.
The Audi R8 5.2 V10 is a car that sounds like it enjoys going fast and wants you to go faster. It's a melodic tone it really is. It's the sound that double cream would make if it could make one. It's a beautiful melody and one that makes you want to go faster and work the gearbox harder to get the best out of it. The next car is something better.
When I think of nice sounding cars I immediately think in Ferraris direction. Out of all the Ferraris the one I like the most is the 458 Italia. With it's gorgeous V8 it barks and roars and shouts its way through its rev range. The noise you get when you change down is also epic as is the noise when you change up. There are few cars that I would ever consider making a soundtrack out of but the 458 Italia is one of them. The volume of the roar is the other thing. It's really quite loud.
If it were up to me I'd say the 458 wins.
