Alfa Romeo are developing a new halo engine that is likely to first appear in the 159 replacing Guilia.
I know what question has just left your lips, why are you talking about an engine in your return to blogging? The reason is that as a petrolhead I love Alfa Romeo. The only thing is that Alfa have never been at the cutting edge of the market technically. There cars tend to be beautiful and pleasant to look at and luxurious to sit in. They also have a habit of being good fun to drive, with competent chassis and peppy engines. Despite this you can never look at an Alfa Romeo and say that is cutting edge technology.
However this new engine is pretty impressive when you read the figures. It is a 1.8 litre turbocharged unit which is pretty small to be honest. No one knows how many cylinders it'll have yet but the best guesses in my head are saying four. Despite all that it produces 295bhp which is no matter what way you cut it, a lot of power. The unit will be made exclusively out of aluminium and will feature high pressure fuel injection. It would be a bit of a miracle if it didn't have Alfas Multiair injection system.
Alfa have said the engine will meet all emissions regulations which would be an impressive feat to say the least. In essence it means that whatever car this engine powers shouldn't feature in the high ends of the tax bands. Right now that looks like the Guilia and the recently announced flagship saloon that'll be based off of the Chrysler 300C.
It sounds like a halo engine and if it is what it says it is, it'll be Alfas very own cutting edge tech! Pretty exciting don't you think?
