This is for all those who are about to start driving and those who wish to reflect on times that have passed them by, of which I am one.
Today on my walk to University (yes that's where I am now) I saw a learner driver. That is nothing remarkable I admit but the look on this learners face was. Allow me to skew into a tiny tangent for a moment. You see when I see learner drivers on the road their faces normally show a mixed expression. That would be fear mixed with utter concentration mixed with even more fear so that they look terrified with a dose of relief that they are not dead yet. This mix of emotions typically leads to a lot of braking and a generally low speed that even a turtle might call slow. When you see these people you think to yourself, poor guy and a sense of sympathy takes over for this person who is venturing out onto the big wide scary road for the first time. This soon turns to anger however but that's not the point. In any case this is what you would expect to see in a learner.
Not today however. Today I saw an expression of jubilation, unmittigated joy and happiness on the learners face. You could see that despite stalling again at the lights that they were enjoying the experience. This sight took me back to when I was in the same position. I personally had the time of my life learning to drive. No boasting here but it probably helped that I was rather good at it. In any case I can fondly look back on those days and honestly say that they were great times.
What I'm trying to say to anyone who's about to take their first steps into a wider world, yes that was a quote from Star Wars which has incidentally only just been released on Blu Ray, is that you're about to have the time of your life. Just make sure you're not too scared to realise it!
