Missing Driving

Now that I'm taking a short break from my shorthand self help exercises it would probably be a very good idea to do a blog. Especially so since the Internet seems to be working OK today!

I was asked yesterday whilst hitching a lift to Sainsburys whether or not I was missing driving. It's been about a month since I came to University and in that time I've not driven anything, in real life at least. Owning a car here, where everything I need is a short walk away would be a humongous waste of money. As such my housemate asked the question, have I been missing it?

The answer is yes. What he doesn't understand is driving to me is what beer is to an alcoholic. I have few problems admitting that I'm pretty much addicted to it. I love the feel of having a car on the edge, the feeling of acceleration and the feeling of everything you feel when you are driving. Going cold turkey hasn't been what I'd call fun.

The other day it hit home hard how much I had been missing driving. I actually started to crave a go in a car, well that's a strong word but I did, when walking home, envisage a car around me. It might have been a bit of a day dream as I was tired at the time. There is something that not driving has shown me however.

What that something is, is what driving, in essence, is. What I mean by that is just what is driving? I'll tell you. Driving is freedom. Think about it for just a second. If you have a car and are able to drive what's to stop you from deciding you want to drive to Germany and then doing it? Nothing is what. There are no physical barriers, you get in drive to the channel tunnel and drive through France. It's this element to driving that I've been missing as well. Not quite driving to France but the point is that as well as missing the sensation of driving I've been missing the freedom that it affords. The feeling of freedom to go where you please and please where you go is one that you don't realise how much you like until you no longer have it.

My advice to you on the back of all my nostalgic missing driving is this; don't let go of your car unless it is absolutely necessary. Got that? Good, thankyou for reading and I hope to see you again tomorrow, assuming my internet holds this secure connection for that long.
