Well in truth BMW was joking.
It was an elaborate joke however and one that was played on the automotive press for an April fool prank. That didn't stop BMW actually giving it the full development treatment however as the vehicle was fully tested. What it featured was an extended tailgate which formed the load bay and a raised cabin (to make it look the buisness) and made use of corrogated aluminium to keep the weight down. It would've been powered by the 4.2 V8 currently being employed in the M3 saloon. In terms of acceleration I know not the figures but I do know that it was electronically limited to 155mph.
According to BMW it ran on stiffer springs and dampers so that it could take the weight of a loaded bay. It also had stiffer anti roll bars to help deal with the extra height. Apparently it wouldn't have held a candle to the salloon variant but even so, it's not bad for a pickup, in fact, it's positively oustanding.
Then again, this is what BMW said and since no one has actually driven the thing and no one ever will we only have BMW's word to take. Yes, they had to be joking.
