Codename F30! (New BMW 3 Series)

Now I’m sure we are all excited to know that BMW are making a new 3 Series.

As the title has said it’s going to be known as the F30. Now the report I have in front of me here states a load of figures that show how much more power it has than its rivals. I’m going to be honest though. I can’t see much in the way of an actual power figure. Now I know I’m a blogger and you probably rely on me to give you some real information but not even I have the time to sit down and work out the power figures for each individual engine. The main top the range engine though is the 3.5 litre straight six and I do know that that particular engine produces 301bhp. Not far off that of the 1M.

So what of actual acceleration figures? The only engine that I have a straight figure for is the 320D ED model, ED standing for Efficient Dynamics in case you aren’t familiar with BM lingo. That car can do the nothing to speed limit sprint in eight seconds. Top speed? I haven’t got a clue as there is no figure in my document thingy here.

But something that is more tangible is the detail that tells me what BMW has done to ensure the F30 handles and rides properly. You see a lot of cars these days get tested on smooth South European roads or race tracks. As such they never really get an idea of how comfy it is to hit something called a pothole. In essence when you do hit a pot hole in a car that has been developed in such a way it hurts! BMW though have taken this car to the worst roads known to the British motorists. What that tells me is that BMW actually care that there car doesn’t hurt people. I think you’ll agree that that’s a good thing.

The styling for the most part is unchanged. I guess the reasoning being that the E90 was such a popular car that BMW wanted to keep much of its shape so that it isn’t hard to spot the lineage. Noteworthy parts include the continuation of the shark fin aerial and the Bangle Flame Surfacing door crease. A new feature that’s supposedly function over style is the Ferrari 458 style fins on the front wings. Funnily enough they do a similar job to the Ferraris versions too. These aren’t designed to provide ultimate downforce though but more channel air over the car in a cleaner way. This should give better economy and lower CO2 emission figures.

Where the new F30 is going to really jump ahead of the old E90 is going to be in its interior. I’m looking at a big picture of the Sport model interior and it looks amazing. I’m not talking about amazing in a concept cars in your face way either. This looks so clean and crisp and functional that it should provide absolutely no stress at all on a long journey. The now much improved I Drive is standard across the range which is good. You also have the clean instrument binnacle that appeared on the E90. Most importantly is that it’s all laid out in a cohesive manner with quality materials used throughout.

So far the F30 is scheduled for a February 2012 release which means you won’t have to wait too long to buy it. Prices start at 24.1 K for the entry level 316d and go right through to £33,300 for the 335i.

BMW had to go all out on this car as it is replacing the top selling model in the current BMW line up and one of their most popular models in a long time. You can think of it as Matt Smith replacing to unfathomably popular David Tennant as the Doctor in BBCs Doctor Who. It’s very important that BMW get it right otherwise there would be trouble. Fortunately I don’t think there will be any problems and I can foresee this being the best Beemer yet.

Thankyou for reading today and I hope you will return again tomorrow or whenever my next blog will be.
