F1 today and I'm talking about last Sundays Chinese GP, in which Rosberg took pole and the win. In both instances it was the first for Mercedes in 55 years.
That's quite a long time if you think about it. As a matter of fact that's pretty much the whole time that F1 has been around. It helps that the Mercedes is a good car this year (even if Schumacher can't catch a break). The truth is it marks yet another great race in the 2012 F1 saga.
They've all been brilliant so far. The Australian GP had far more overtaking than in any other I can remember with Button winning for Mclaren. Then Malaysia's weather made that race as unpredictable as ever with Alonso winning for Ferrari and now the 10 car battle for second over the last 15 or so laps at China with Rosberg winning for Mercedes. Three races and three different constructors winning. This is not to mention qualifying. The difference between getting through to qualy three in China was about 7 tenths of a second. The field is remarkebly close this year.
Why? Well that's a bloody good question. If you have to pick anything it's that the rules haven't changed much technically, much unlike the last five years or so. The only real change is no blown diffusers, which was using hot exhaust gasses to accelerate the air running through the diffuser, in essence tricking it to think you were going faster than you were giving more downforce. It hasn't taken much to design a car that isn't using this.
So we look forward to next weekend and the Bahrain GP. Very controversial at the moment for a lot more reasons than I give a dam about, pretty much all the reasons then. What I will say is that the race has never been a champion of excitement. I think that Bahrain will be a real test of whether or not F1 2012 is going to be the best yet.
So for some fun stuff, who's going to be crowned champion at the end of all the chaos? It's hard to say really. I have three in mind and they are, in no particular order, Jenson Button, Michael Schumacher (darkhorse) and the current leader Lewis Hamilton. I think Schumacher has been unlucky so far this season and once his luck gets itself together he'll show that he's up there with Rosberg. Rosberg was only ahead of Schumi in out and out pace in China after all. Hamilton seems to have got over his demons from last year and has matured greatly as a driver and is delivering consistent results. There's that and the fatc that the Mclaren has been the most consistent team so far. Button because if he hadn't run into some bad luck in Malaysia he would be leading the championship now.
We'll see how those predictions pan out but for now I'd like to congratulate Nico on his first win and thank you for reading todays blog and hope you'll return again soon.
